K2 extension
K2 extension is so powerful and is used in demo sites in order to improve management of presentations and content. You can run themes without having K2 extension but it’s highly recommended to have it because it’s a solid extension which is beneficial to many users.
3.x Standard Article
It has a highly responsive design and templates of its previous versions can work well with it without making any changes.
K2 extension items vs 3.x Standard Article
- Import
- K2 extension has a feature for importing. You only need to click once and automatically it converts the categories or sections and articles to items and categories without altering the original document. It however doesn’t have an option for exporting to standard articles. 3.x Standard Article on the other hand does not require the import feature.
- Comments
- K2 extension has a commenting system that is in-built. This feature can either work for the registered users only or for all the users.
- 3.x Standard Article does not have a comments feature. However an additional component or plug-in which has FB comments features can be installed.
- Images and Quality
- K2 extension’s uploaded images get auto-resized either per category or globally to six configurable dimensions. The quality of the generated thumbs can also be set and all images in an article are clickable.
- In 3.x Standard Article, images are added via the images and links bar or through an editor. These images have the same quality as those of the uploaded images. This means that you have to resize the images to be exactly the same size or just some few pixels larger than their dimension on a website.
- Tags
- Both K2 extension and 3.x Standard Article have Tags.
- SEO
- Both K2 extension and 3.x Standard Article have SEO
- Sub templates for categories
- K2 extension allows you to create different layouts in one category. It is easy to create several templates and assign them to several categories. On the other hand, 3.x Standard Article does not have sub templates for categories.
- Extra fields in articles
- K2 extension has extra fields in articles but 3.x Standard Article does not have.
- Social sharing
- K2 extension has a social sharing feature while in 3.x Standard Article, one has to install a plug-in.
- Authors profile page
- K2 extension has an author’s profile page but 3.x Standard Article does not have one.
- Front end submission with access controls
- Both K2 extension and 3.x Standard Article have the front end submission with access control feature. However this feature is more advanced in K2 extension.
